During the summer I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Jane Lamberth, owner (along with husband Myles) of the amazing Shells Cafe in Strandhill, Co. Sligo. (Check out the article I did reviewing Shells, it’s such a cool spot). Whilst interviewing the guys for the original article I mentioned to Jane that I loved their beautiful book – The Surf Cafe Cookbook – and I was delighted when Jane then told me that another book was imminent. That book – Surf Cafe Living – arrived on my doorstep many months ago and I have only recently started trying out the gorgeous recipes at home. This lifestyle book tells more of the wonderful story about Jane and Myles’ life in Strandhill and also includes many beautiful photos and anecdotes about the design of their home and the products within it.
The book is gorgeously designed; the typography and hand drawn illustrations make it a must for designers and cooks alike. The book for me for a much more interesting read than your average recipe book and it really is something that you will go back to time and time again, discovering new snippets of interesting information every time. Not only does it include many wonderful recipes but also goes beyond that to help you with the practical elements of cooking – like preparing squid!
The guys at Shells really have tapped into a niche market, inspiring anyone to change their diet and a ‘have a go’ at cooking and at outdoor living. The stories about Jane and Myles creating their home from an empty shell will please those that love Grand Designs and the lifestyle imagery will make you want to pack up the kids and move to Strandhill! A great book for both the recipes and the design.
Some of my favourite recipes in the book:
Baked Eggs En Croute
Shells Cafe Chickpea Stew
Spiced Butternut Squash Soup
