Ever wondered what the risk is from dying in a plane crash? Or how resistant a human now is to antibiotics? How about when the peak time for breaking-up with a partner according to Facebook posts? These are the kind of weird and wonderful statistics that Information Is Beautiful transforms into easy to understand, visually stunning info-graphic designs.
Information is Beautiful is the brainchild of London based author/designer David McCandless and their website explains the mission David and his team are on pretty clearly – ‘Myself, and the rest of the crack team here at Information is Beautiful, are dedicated to distilling the world’s data, information and knowledge into beautiful, interesting and, above all, useful visualizations, infographics and diagrams.’
The designs stand-alone as impressive, stunning pieces of graphic design; however, it is the information they represent that makes this book (and website) enthralling, interesting and extremely addictive. The research involved is immense and their attention to detail is commendable – their website explains that 80% of the work involved in creating one of the info-graphics is in the research and the checking of results. The quirkiness of the ideas visualised by David and his team adds a sense of humour to the project too; and although some of the information is humorous, other parts deal with more serious matters.
This project injects statistics (which generally are seen to be boring) with an amazing amount of creativity resulting in stunning, timeless designs that are a pleasure to read through, as well as been educational. The book is really hard to put down and don’t be surprised if you find yourself spouting weird facts to your friends after you read it. Information Is Beautiful is a must for anyone’s book collection, and if you don’t have room on the shelf then pop over to their website and indulge in some online fact finding.
